City Project Intern 2017

Trey Williford with Mercy Hill Church - Greensboro, NC

Hello Everyone!

Last summer many of you supported me as I participated in a summer discipleship program for college students, City Project, through Mercy Hill Church (Greensboro, NC). This summer I get to return to Greensboro and serve as an intern at Mercy Hill, for the City Project program! Last summer, City Project provided me with a scriptural foundation for my faith, parsed my gifts and showed how they fit into the mission of God, and grew a desire in me to see the gospel taken to every corner of the earth. Having one more available summer in college, I want to leverage it to serve the body of Christ. My hope is to take what I’ve learned and the experiences I’ve had to serve and invest in other college students who will serve and invest in others.

I will be leading these students through a week in New York where we will be engaging the city and sharing the gospel with Muslims, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Then I’ll spend five weeks in Greensboro supporting the students as they serve with a community partner in the city and learn practical theology from pastors at Mercy Hill. The final two weeks I’ll lead a team to serve in an international context alongside ministry partners in that country. Our hope is at the end of the summer the students would have developed a knowledge of how the gospel speaks to their life in every area (all relationships, finances, their current school and future vocation, etc.), and are equipped to return to their campus as disciples who make disciples.

At first, it doesn’t make sense for a college student to commit a summer during their college years to engage full-time with the mission of God around the globe, but God has given me so many people who have poured their lives out for me – my parents and family, my home church, the people at Mercy Church (Charlotte, NC) and Mercy Hill Church (Greensboro, NC). Even greater than the gratitude I feel for all those people, is the beauty of the story of God. I believe that God created the heavens and the earth and all that has existed. He created us to display his glory and to be in a relationship with him for eternity. But we, humans, chose to rebel against our Creator and live life the way we want to live. This sin keep us from having the relationship that God intended to have with us in the beginning. The product of our sin has been sickness, death, disease, war, etc. By rebelling against our holy and good God, we have traded him for our own selfishness – an eternal death. We had no hope. But God looked down on us with mercy and graciously sent us his Son, Jesus Christ, into the cold and sick world that we messed up. Jesus was fully human, yet he never sinned. He lived the perfect life that no one could live – perfectly obedient and in relationship with God. He was persecuted by us, unjustly tried in our courts, and went to the cross, being nailed to the tree by the people he came to save. He suffered and died, in our place, to pay for all the sins of the world. But three days later, he rose from the grave, forever defeating sin and death. If someone will repent (turn) of their sin, and believe in Jesus, they will be saved from the consequences of their sin and saved to know and be loved by the Father. This summer, my desire is that we would take the message of the gospel to those who have never before heard it, and they would turn from their own way and trust Jesus to be their Savior and friend.

To serve these students and take the gospel throughout the world, God needs to raise $2,500 by May 22nd. I invite you to prayerfully consider partnering with me by giving any $50, $100 or $200 (tax deductible) amount to help with the monetary cost. Any gift that you give will be monumental in taking this beautiful good news to people who might never hear it otherwise. If you can assist me financially, please make checks payable to Mercy Hill Church with “City Project – Trey” written on the memo line. You may also give online at www.mercyhillgso.com/support. The cost is high; your return on investment is eternal. If you have any questions about how this total amount will serve God’s mission, please reach out and I’ll be happy to explain the budget.

Most importantly, please pray. Through prayer, Jesus, his disciples, and Christians for thousands of years saw God work miracles and change lives forever. Please pray that I would simply be a laborer for the work of God this summer, the people we will engage with the gospel, and that I would be obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

“How then will they call on him whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?” –Romans 10:14-15
